Justitia - The Roman Goddess of Justice

In 1985 the insurance market for lawyers in New Zealand was dominated by London. A number of members of the legal profession, including Rhys Harrison, John Olphett, Ross Fanthorpe and others decided to set up a rival entity to provide capacity and competition and drive “justice” in that market.

Justitia Mutual Association Incorporated, an incorporated society, was set up in 1985 to pursue that objective.

Working with Aon, the world’s leading insurance broker, Justitia has sought for almost 40 years to provide high quality professional indemnity and associated legal liability group product and risk management insurance to the legal profession in New Zealand. The 1987 share market crash provided challenges and lean years, with Justitia stepping up during its infancy and taking a scaled back layer to assist member firms over that period.

Insurance and Support by Lawyers, for Lawyers

Justitia is not an insurance company. Justitia is a body founded and run by lawyers for the benefit of lawyers.

Seeking to benefit legal practitioners, from individuals to lawyer firms, the Board of Management of Justitia is guided by the principles and philosophies of a voluntary co-operative.

Working closely with Aon, Justitia provides competitive, market-focused insurance cover (through Aon) focused on the needs of its members and terms acceptable to them. Justitia’s assistance extends beyond insurance cover to also include professional and knowledgeable insurance advice and services, including companion policies and extensions aimed at, and tailored to, the legal profession. With the support of Aon, Justitia’s members also receive administrative and technical claim support from insurance specialists.

During its history Justitia has handled in excess of 5,100 notifications, almost 1,000 of which led to assistance from panel lawyers to defend.

Currently made up of over 270 members, representing a range of legal firms from around the country, membership of Justitia is open to all legal practitioners in New Zealand.
